I’ve had this info within an hour of it’s release. Should I have created the articles that day/night? To me, the THOUGHT/IDEA of what Elon is doing, is more important than rushing to release a news article.
Elon Musk has announced a delay in Cybertruck deliveries in California as Tesla donates several vehicles to assist communities affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires. The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team shared a photo on social media of donated Cybertrucks, which will provide power and free Wi-Fi to areas without electricity, including the sheriff’s station.
According to Tesla’s website, Cybertrucks can serve as backup power sources for homes for up to three days. The donated trucks are also equipped with Starlink terminals to deliver free internet access. Musk stated that more Cybertrucks will be deployed to affected areas across Los Angeles and Malibu to act as mobile base stations.
In a post on X, Musk apologized to customers awaiting deliveries, explaining the urgent need for these vehicles in disaster relief efforts:
“Apologies to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days. We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered end of week,” Musk wrote.
Currently, about 150,000 people in Los Angeles County remain under evacuation orders due to the fires, with more than 700 residents seeking refuge in nine shelters, according to local authorities. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that evacuation orders for the Palisades area are unlikely to be lifted until red flag warnings expire on Wednesday evening.
This move underscores Tesla’s growing emphasis on leveraging its technologies for disaster relief, combining Cybertruck capabilities with Starlink internet to provide essential services to communities in crisis.
By leveraging Starlink’s fleet of 300 direct-to-cell satellites, the service will provide coverage across 500,000 square miles of U.S. territory that traditional cell towers cannot reach.
The program, slated for early 2025, will initially focus on text messaging but plans to expand to voice and data capabilities over time. Unlike existing emergency satellite messaging options, such as those on iPhones, Starlink’s integration will allow users to enjoy uninterrupted service, using their phones as usual without requiring special configurations.
The beta program will be free for T-Mobile postpaid voice customers with compatible devices, with a priority given to first responders and individuals in critical need. Although a list of optimized devices is not yet available, T-Mobile assures compatibility with most modern mobile phones. Participants will provide feedback ahead of the service’s commercial rollout, expected later in 2025.
This initiative follows FCC approval and represents a major step toward T-Mobile’s vision of “Experience Coverage Beyond.” By integrating Starlink’s satellite technology into its network, T-Mobile aims to ensure connectivity in even the most remote locations, from rural areas to outdoor events and even airplanes.
To register for the beta program, interested customers can fill out a simple form with their name, email, and phone number. Notifications will be sent to those accepted into the program.
Why It Matters:
The T-Mobile Starlink collaboration marks a pivotal advancement in eliminating dead zones, transforming satellites into space-based cell towers. This groundbreaking innovation will benefit T-Mobile customers, businesses, and first responders alike, making seamless connectivity in hard-to-reach areas a reality.
