Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024, in what authorities describe as a “targeted attack.” The assailant, using a firearm possibly equipped with a silencer, fired multiple shots at Thompson before fleeing on an e-bike. The suspect, seen on surveillance footage wearing a hooded jacket, remains at large, with the NYPD offering a $10,000 reward for information.

Thompson, 50, led the largest private health insurer in the U.S., generating over $281 billion in revenue last year. He was en route to an investor event, which UnitedHealth canceled following the incident. His wife revealed Thompson had received threats but had not altered his routines.
Thompson, a resident of Maple Grove, Minnesota, worked at UnitedHealth for over 20 years and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. His death has prompted condolences from business leaders and public officials, with investigations ongoing into the motive and circumstances of the attack.
